TRANSPARENT, WITH THE METHOD EXPLAINED

How we calculate the
Coolcation Score.

The index measures climatic summer comfort only. It does not claim to identify the most beautiful or the best destination.

50 %

Daytime comfort

Typical daily maximum temperatures carry the most weight. Temperatures around 20–21 °C earn the most points; strong heat significantly reduces the score.

25 %

Overnight recovery

Cool to mild nights are central to the coolcation idea. Very warm nights noticeably reduce the score.

15 %

Humidity discomfort

We assess dew point rather than relative humidity. This provides a more meaningful climatic comparison of how muggy conditions feel.

10 %

Rainfall

Rainfall contributes to the score, with deliberately less weight. A green, changeable region should not automatically lose out to dry summer destinations.

Why sea temperature is excluded

Including it would systematically favour coastal destinations over mountains, lakes and cities. We therefore show water temperatures as additional information, without including them in the score.

What the score does not measure

Prices, crowds, accessibility, cultural attractions, scenery and personal preferences are outside the calculation. Our detailed travel guides cover those aspects.

Why June, July and August?

The index deliberately answers a specific question: where can you enjoy the traditional European high summer in a comfortable climate? These three months therefore form the annual score.

ORIGINAL DATA

Traceable.
Available to download.

The Coolcation Index 2027 is based on 1,068 checked monthly datasets for 89 destinations. The index evaluates the 267 summer months covering June, July and August. The climate series mainly use the 1991–2020 normal period; some documented long-term sources use 1991–2021.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions about the
Coolcation Index.

The score helps you understand summer climates. It does not replace the weather forecast before your trip.

What is the Coolcation Index?+

The Coolcation Index compares destinations by how comfortable their climate typically feels during the European summer. It assesses daytime comfort, overnight recovery, mugginess and rainfall.

Which months are included in the Coolcation Index 2027?+

The summer score is the average of June, July and August. Each destination also has an individual score for each of these three months.

What does a high Coolcation Score mean?+

A high score indicates a balanced summer climate with comfortable daytime temperatures, restful nights, little mugginess and no very heavy rainfall burden. The score is not a weather forecast.

Why is sea temperature excluded from the score?+

The index is designed to compare coastal, mountain, lake and city destinations fairly. Sea temperature is therefore shown as additional information, without affecting the score.

Does the index include travel quality, prices or crowds?+

No. The Coolcation Index measures climatic summer comfort only. Travel quality, accessibility, prices, events and crowds are deliberately excluded from the score.
