YOUR HOLIDAY. COMFORTABLY DIFFERENT.

Sometimes happiness
is waiting
further up the valley.

In Lesachtal, the walk to an alpine pasture can be the whole day’s plan. And a good mountain snack is a convincing reason to stop for longer.

Between the Carnic Alps and the mountains north of the Gail are small villages, scattered farmhouses and steep meadows. The road winds through the landscape; even on the journey in, you realise that distances work differently here than they do on a map.

The region suits people who enjoy exploring on foot and appreciate a quiet evening. Combine short cultural walks with full days in the mountains. Choosing the right route matters: a village path, an alpine pasture hike and a high-mountain crossing make for three very different days.

Which region does this guide cover?

This guide focuses on Carinthia’s Lesachtal valley, including Birnbaum, Liesing, St. Lorenzen, Maria Luggau and their side valleys. Obertilliach in East Tyrol is a possible excursion, especially in winter. Nassfeld, Weissensee and Carinthia’s other swimming lakes are not part of this destination.

Obergail

Farmhouses, mountain views and paths into the countryside. Choose a suitable hike towards the Obergail valley and plan detours and elevation gain deliberately.

02 / CULTURE & CRAFTS

Maria Luggau

The basilica, old watermills and traditional rural crafts can turn a short walk into a varied day out.

Maria Luggau in Lesachtal
03 / ST. LORENZEN & FROHN

Time for valley views

Grassy slopes, farmhouses and mountain silhouettes. This part of the holiday calls mainly for time — and a good viewpoint.

04

Wolayersee

An alpine lake surrounded by rocky scenery at around 1,960 metres. From Hubertuskapelle, the tourist office lists roughly 8 km and 885 metres of ascent to reach it; allow a full mountain day for the return trip.

05

Brot- und Morendenweg

Hiking and regional food go hand in hand here. Plan stops and tastings around business opening times rather than expecting places to eat all along the trail.

06

Maria Luggau Mill Trail

Five historic watermills on a short circuit: about 1.3 km, roughly 100 metres of elevation gain and around one hour of actual walking. Allow extra time for a tour, the museum and breaks.

The “Mountains & Lakes” rating reflects the mountain scenery, not a swimming holiday. Lake swimming is not a recommended reason to come here; that does not imply a blanket swimming ban. Winter sports mainly means cross-country skiing and other winter activities; for downhill skiing, nearby Obertilliach is an option. Hiking refers to snow-free trails; all ratings assume suitable routes and current access permissions. “Cities & Culture” means village traditions, churches and crafts. Cycling requires fitness for mountain terrain and permitted routes.

MonthVisitor numbersPricesAssessment
JanuaryQuiet; busier during school holidaysMid-rangeQuiet winter days and cold nights. January can suit groomed cross-country trails, prepared winter walks and a cosy place to stay. High-altitude summer hikes are not an alternative; snow conditions and which facilities are open will determine what is possible.
FebruaryModerate; busier during school holidaysMid-range to higherLonger days for an active winter holiday. Cross-country skiing or an excursion to nearby Obertilliach can work in good conditions. Book early during holiday weeks; ski touring demands experience and up-to-date avalanche information.
MarchQuietGenerally lowerA transition between winter and thaw: sunny moments in the villages are possible, but many mountain trails remain snowy or icy. A flexible stay with wellness facilities and short walks works better than a fixed mountain-hut itinerary.
AprilVery quietGenerally lowerThe valley turns greener while the high mountains often remain wintry. Wet paths, lingering snow and limited places to stop for food make April a transitional month. Wait for suitable conditions for short village and cultural walks.
MayQuietMid-rangeFresh green meadows and more time outdoors. Lower-level hikes pair well with village visits; higher crossings and mountain huts are not yet reliably ready for summer.
JuneModerateMid-rangeLong days for meadows, woodland and trails to alpine pastures. Choose higher routes only after checking snow conditions and hut openings. Set off early and allow for showers or thunderstorms; nights stay pleasantly cool.
JulyBusierHigherAlpine summer brings the widest choice of hikes. For Wolayersee and other long routes, start early and plan around weather and the return journey. School holidays bring more visitors; hot days and strong thunderstorms remain possible.
AugustBusierHigherPlenty of choice for active families and mountain hikers, but this is also peak season. Plan hut visits and preferred accommodation ahead. A rest day between demanding hikes leaves time for mills, farmhouse bread and village life.
SeptemberModerateMid-rangeAn especially good choice for hiking with fewer school-holiday crowds. Mornings grow cooler and days shorter; snow can already fall at high elevations. Check mountain-hut opening times before any longer route.
OctoberQuietGenerally lowerAutumn colours and quiet villages, but increasingly short daylight hours for hikes. Weather systems south of the Alps can bring heavy rain. Suitable for lower-level walks and food-focused breaks; do not count on high-alpine adventures.
NovemberVery quietGenerally lowerThe low season brings few visitors but limited open accommodation and eating options. Wet weather, frost and early snow restrict trails. Not very suitable for a conventional hiking holiday.
DecemberQuiet; busier over the holidaysHigher over the holidaysA time for winter atmosphere and cosy accommodation. Whether cross-country trails and ski areas are ready depends on snow and operating conditions. Around Christmas, demand — and often prices — rise considerably.

YOUR PREFERENCES. YOUR HOLIDAY.

For everyone who
likes to arrive slowly.

Lesachtal is especially rewarding when the landscape itself is your main activity.

A great fit for you.

  • You want to hike without immediately driving to the next attraction afterwards.
  • You are looking for quiet villages, farms and regional food.
  • You like warm summer days and often refreshingly cool evenings.
  • You are travelling with children who enjoy short walks, streams, meadows and mills.
  • You want to spend several days in one place.

What you should know.

  • A winding road connects the villages; short distances on a map do not mean short driving times.
  • Mountain hikes can be long and demanding. A beautiful photo of a lake does not make the climb easy.
  • The valley is not a typical swimming destination and has little urban nightlife.
  • In the shoulder seasons, some accommodation, mountain huts and restaurants are closed.
  • Current trail closures also affect seemingly easy connections. Check locally and never bypass a closed section.

FROM WANDERLUST TO A PLAN

One week.
One good base.

A flexible summer idea for 5–7 nights. Let the weather, rather than a rigid schedule, decide the order.

01 / DAYS 1–2

Arrive & explore village life

Settle into your accommodation in Liesing, St. Lorenzen or Maria Luggau. Start with a short local walk and the mill trail. Pick up local produce for a picnic and find out which paths are open.

02 / DAYS 3–4

A good day in the mountains

Depending on your fitness, choose an alpine pasture walk or the long ascent to Wolayersee. Save the most settled-weather day for it. Keep the following day free for shorter walks, rest or exploring local food.

03 / DAYS 5–7

Go at your own pace

Explore Obergail or choose another officially open trail. Allow a day for bad weather and another without a summit objective. A second demanding hike is an option, not an obligation.

Suggested itinerary for snow-free conditions. Tours are neither booked nor guided. Several crossings of the Gail and connecting paths are currently closed, so this itinerary does not assume an uninterrupted valley walk. In winter, replace the mountain days with open cross-country trails and officially accessible winter routes.

GETTING HERE

Plan the final stretch

By car, the usual approaches are via Kötschach-Mauthen from the east or Sillian and the Tyrolean Gail Valley from the west. The B111 has plenty of bends, so allow extra time for the final leg.

By train, look for a suitable regional bus connection or pre-booked transfer. Your actual accommodation location matters more than the village name alone. Check the final service especially carefully on Sundays and public holidays.

Getting here & current timetables

GETTING AROUND

Choose a good base

Liesing and St. Lorenzen make practical bases for several parts of the valley; Maria Luggau is particularly convenient for the mills, pilgrimage site and western valley. A remote farmhouse can be wonderfully peaceful but requires more transport planning.

The region links to bus routes 205 and 965. The LesachtalCard provides certain transport benefits; confirm eligibility, validity and included services with your accommodation. Not every hiking car park has a bus stop.

BUDGET & EQUIPMENT

Pack for changeable weather

Include accommodation, meals, travel, transfers and any guided visits in your budget. Summer school holidays and Christmas can be pricier; cheaper shoulder seasons often mean fewer businesses are open. Prices in euros without specific travel dates would not be reliable.

Sturdy shoes, rain protection, a warm layer, sun protection, water and a trail map are part of mountain preparation. Check the weather, closures and hut opening times immediately before setting off. Via ferratas and ski touring require additional equipment and expertise.

GOOD TO KNOW, HONESTLY

A little planning.
Lots to look forward to.

When is the best time to visit Lesachtal?

For a varied hiking holiday, generally June to September. Higher-altitude routes are usually better in midsummer to early autumn, depending on snow and weather. May and October are more suited to selected lower-level walks. Check current conditions separately for winter activities.

Is Lesachtal really cool in summer?

Its elevation often brings cool evenings. In Kornat, average daytime highs in midsummer are around 23°C. That is not a temperature ceiling: sunshine, warm air masses and sheltered slopes can produce much higher temperatures.

Do we need a car?

A car makes remote trailheads easier to reach. Travelling without one can work if you stay near a bus stop, choose suitable services and pre-book transfers when necessary. Plan each hike together with the return journey.

What is suitable for families?

The short mill trail and selected village and themed walks are good starting points. With children, a walk usually takes longer than the stated walking time. Long mountain hikes such as Wolayersee are not casual strolls and require stamina.

Can we go on a swimming holiday here?

Lesachtal is primarily a mountain and nature destination. Alpine lakes are cold and some require lengthy hikes to reach; the Gail River is not a substitute for a supervised bathing lake. If swimming matters to you, choose accommodation with a suitable pool.

What can we do when it rains?

Depending on opening hours, you could visit the basilica, take a mill tour or try regional food experiences. A good book and time at your accommodation can be part of the trip too. Check that any wellness facilities actually exist and are accessible; there is no big-city range of spontaneous indoor activities.

Which hiking trails are currently open?

Weather, forestry work and damage to paths or bridges can change access. The official closure list currently includes several crossings of the Gail and connecting paths. Check that list and ask your accommodation before each hike; the monthly suitability rating does not mean a route is open.

How long should we stay?

Three nights are enough for a first impression; five to seven give you more flexibility for weather and rest. One fixed base is usually sufficient. Plan mountain-hut stays separately and according to your experience in alpine terrain.
