YOUR HOLIDAY. COMFORTABLY DIFFERENT.

A neighbourhood.
An island.
Your own pace.

Culture, gardens and the sea make an alternative summer trip with useful indoor options.

Gothenburg is more than a ferry gateway. Treat Haga as a neighbourhood walk, a collection as its own cultural visit and the riverfront as a place for a break. A central base makes it easier to adapt to wind and rain rather than committing to a long transfer every morning.

The southern islands are car-free and served by public passenger ferries. A bridge connects Styrsö and Donsö for walkers; Vrångö offers another choice for a nature day. Choose a manageable island area for each outing. The ferry is transport and part of the experience, but does not guarantee interchangeable connections.

In the north, Hönö, Öckerö and Björkö provide a different setting with vehicle ferry access from Lilla Varholmen. A harbour visit and a suitable coastal walk can make a complete day. A week can combine the city and both island areas without touring the entire west coast.

Which region does this guide cover?

This guide covers Gothenburg with Haga, the urban riverfront, Slottsskogen and the Botanical Garden, plus the southern islands Brännö, Styrsö, Donsö and Vrångö and the northern islands Hönö, Öckerö and Björkö. Other islands are not a separate checklist. Marstrand, the wider Bohuslän coast, Dalarna/Lake Siljan, Stockholm and Lapland are outside this destination.

PLACES THAT STAY WITH YOU

City and islands.
Three starting points.

A starting point for planning; you need not visit every island.

01

GOTHENBURG · CITY

Gothenburg

Give neighbourhoods, museums and the riverfront their own daily blocks. The city base remains worthwhile in rain; make culture and fika part of the trip itself.

02

SOUTHERN ISLANDS

Styrsö & Donsö

Two islands linked by a pedestrian and cycle bridge. Choose an arrival jetty, a suitable walk and a confirmed return rather than ferrying between islands for quick photographs.

03

NORTHERN ISLANDS

Hönö

Hönö Klåva provides a harbour setting; Ersdalen is a possible nature outing. Northern access differs from the southern passenger ferry system.

04

Haga

A neighbourhood for an unhurried stroll and fika. Leave time to sit down; every famous address need not become a separate stop.

05

Slottsskogen

A city park with paths and play areas. Adapt the circuit to time, mobility and weather.

06

Botanical Garden

A garden visit in its own right or a short green break. Check open areas and current visitor guidance.

07

Brännö

Another southern island for a deliberately chosen day trip. Include the walk from your actual arrival jetty.

08

Vrångö

Nature paths and a harbour setting; much of the island is protected. Use suitable paths and respect local rules.

09

Öckerö

A northern alternative for a village and coastal day. Plan accommodation, supplies and the return journey.

10

Björkö

A harbour and coastal paths for their own day plan. Select the correct ferry rather than treating the northern islands as one stop.

The monthly overview uses the lowland Göteborg A reference. Wind can make exposed island shores feel quite different. Hot spells remain possible; proximity to the sea does not guarantee cool weather.

YOUR PREFERENCES. YOUR HOLIDAY.

A good fit,
with room to adapt.

Allow for wind, rain and ferry connections. The city offers a worthwhile counterpart to island days.

A great fit for you.

  • You want a city base with island excursions.
  • You enjoy gardens, culture and coastal walks alike.
  • You travel without a car and plan connections carefully.
  • With children, you leave time for play and warm breaks.
  • You want a summer alternative with useful indoor options.

What you should know.

  • Summer weekends and events can increase demand for rooms and popular ferry departures.
  • Southern and northern islands have different gateways; plan each journey separately.
  • Wind can make exposed shores uncomfortable and affect boat plans.
  • Do not assume seasonal cafés and excursion boats operate year-round.
  • Winter days offer less daylight for island walks.
  • The sea is not reliably warm swimming water. Check current site guidance.

FROM WANDERLUST TO A PLAN

One week.
Room for island days.

Six or seven nights, a city base and an optional short island stay.

An editorial itinerary, not a bookable package. Check return transport, wind, path conditions and opening arrangements for each day.

GETTING HERE

Choose your city base first

Check international rail, flight and onward connections for your dates. Well-connected accommodation simplifies both city days and island access.

Southern island outings do not require a car. Check an island address against the actual arrival jetty and walking route.

Plan connections

FERRIES

Distinguish the two systems

Southern passenger ferries run as part of Västtrafik’s public network year-round. Check schedules, jetties and current ticket conditions.

Northern vehicle ferry gateways are at Lilla Varholmen. Do not treat seasonal direct excursion boats from the city as the standard connection.

Getting to the islands

FAMILIES

One island is enough

Plan short walks, meals and toilets. Supervise children near the water; rocky shores are not unsupervised playgrounds.

Check ferry boarding and paths for buggies or wheelchairs individually. A city park remains a worthwhile alternative to a windy island day.

Slottsskogen

BUDGET

Compare the full cost

Sweden uses the Swedish krona. Add accommodation, meals and transport for your exact dates.

Check zones, ticket validity and any reservations with the operator. Qualitative monthly guidance is not a live price offer.

Current transport information

COASTAL DAYS

Current conditions decide

Check wind, rain and path surfaces. A warm layer and shoes with grip are useful even on short island walks.

Swim only at suitable sites according to local advice and your ability. Kayaking requires its own operator and weather checks.
