Gothenburg without a car: Styrsö and Donsö in early summer

Two connected islands make a complete outing. The key is a suitable ferry plan rather than constant island changes.

WHY NOW

Why this season?

Longer early-summer days allow more room for an island walk. Timetables, wind and individual ability still shape the outing.

Choose transport before the walk

Styrsö with Donsö offers a manageable proposal for a car-free island day. Southern passenger ferries form part of the Västtrafik public network. Check the current planner and ticket conditions for your journey. Different gateways may suit different starting points; a familiar jetty name alone is not a complete itinerary.

Note the actual arrival, your intended return jetty and an earlier return option. Sailings do not all serve identical stops. Include the walk back to the ferry before choosing the length of your island circuit. If booking island accommodation, also confirm luggage arrangements, walking access and supplies. An attractive map cannot replace a practical arrival plan.

The bridge connects rather than obliges

A bridge provides a pedestrian and cycle connection between Styrsö and Donsö. It allows a connected outing without taking another ferry for every change of location. You still need not walk around both entire islands. Pick an outward route, a break and a clear return that fit your group.

For a first visit, walking is often the simpler plan. With bicycles, check carriage, available space and suitable paths as well. The possibility of taking a bike does not guarantee that a particular boat has room for yours. Buggies and wheelchairs require suitable vehicles, jetties and path surfaces individually.

Keep the city within the trip

The following day can be back in Gothenburg. A museum visit or garden break creates a different rhythm and prevents the island portion becoming a daily transport project. Bring food, drinking water and a warm layer; do not base the outing on a business happening to be open.

If the forecast makes a long outdoor walk unappealing, move the island day. Do not turn the ferry into an obligation that must be fulfilled in any conditions. A short, well-matched visit to Styrsö and Donsö is more worthwhile than a route that works only when everything is ideal.
