YOUR HOLIDAY. COMFORTABLY DIFFERENT.
Southern Tenerife is a great choice when sunshine and relaxed holiday days come first. For a Coolcation, your travel dates make all the difference.
From Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos through El Médano to the west coast, you find the island’s drier and generally sunnier side. Many beaches have good facilities, but Atlantic conditions still need checking every day.
November through May feels pleasantly mild to many visitors. From July through September, the south becomes a warm summer destination—great for sea and sand, less suitable for long hikes or those sensitive to heat.
The south is not a shortcut to experiencing the whole island. Teide, Teno and Los Gigantes make rewarding excursions; for laurel forests, northern towns and cloudy green landscapes, Northern Tenerife deserves its own visit.
This guide covers Tenerife’s southern and southwestern coast from El Médano through Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje to Los Gigantes, plus Teide excursions. Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, Anaga and the green north coast are covered in our separate Northern Tenerife guide. The monthly figures describe a low-lying coastal reference—not Teide.
PLACES THAT STAY WITH YOU
Three sides of the south: relaxed, windswept and high above the sea.

A convenient base for beaches, restaurants and short journeys. Choose your beach by wind, waves and your needs—not just the location of your hotel.

From the sunny coast up into cool volcanic air: a wonderful contrast to beach days. Start early, pack layers and check the latest road, cable-car and trail information.

Dark cliffs and open Atlantic. Particularly beautiful in late afternoon. Choose responsible boat operators and never underestimate the sea.
A broad beach, plenty of wind and water sports. Excellent for activity and people-watching, not always a calm place to swim.
A useful change of temperature. The drive soon feels like a different island; allow ample time to return.
Practical for families and rest days. Southern Tenerife offers comfort, but the best excursions still have realistic day plans.

The bars show published average air temperatures for the low-lying coastal reference. Southern Tenerife becomes warm to hot in midsummer. For a more comfortable week, start activities early, take shade breaks and plan occasional days at altitude rather than packing every day with excursions.
Temperature comparison: The bars show the 1991–2020 climate normal. The coloured line shows how the five most recent complete years, 2021–2025, differ: red = warmer, green = cooler. These five years form a recent comparison period, not a new climate normal.

All suitability ratings are editorial assessments. Sea & Coast reflects beaches, coastal villages and Atlantic scenery, not guaranteed calm swimming. Actual swimming conditions depend on the beach, waves, warning flags and your tolerance of cool water. Mountains & Lakes refers to the highland and volcanic landscapes; there are no classic swimming lakes.

YOUR PREFERENCES. YOUR HOLIDAY.
The south is particularly good for a mild winter break or sunny beach days—with realistic heat planning during summer.
Mild days on the coast from November to April; leave weather flexibility.
Best June to October; check Atlantic conditions each day.
Very good with suitable beaches and short journeys.
Teide and the west coast contrast beautifully with beach days.
Especially good in spring and autumn; set off early in summer.
Allow a day or two in the north for historic towns.
Use responsible boat operators and manage expectations.
Elevation changes and summer heat are demanding.
Easier outside holiday periods; budget for car hire and flights.
Better away from the big hotel zones.
Not a reliable winter-sports destination.
Editorial suitability, not a quality rating of individual towns or properties. 0 = unsuitable, 5 = excellent. Your heat tolerance and the actual weather remain decisive.

WEST COAST
FROM WANDERLUST TO A PLAN
A relaxed idea for five to eight nights. Plan beach days around wind and excursions around visibility and temperature.
Choose a nearby beach and keep your first day relaxed. Check warning flags and wind before setting swimming plans.
Leave early for Teide or the highlands. Pack warm layers and avoid adding another major excursion.
Los Gigantes, El Médano or another beach day: leave room for wind, bookings and your group’s travel pace.
Suggested itinerary with one base in the south. Access restrictions, reservations and warnings can change. A rental car helps for Teide and the west; organised mountain excursions are also available.
GETTING THERE
Tenerife South is nearer most beaches; Tenerife North is closer to Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Anaga. Connections change seasonally, so check current flights when booking.
Airports on TenerifeGETTING AROUND
Buses link many resorts. A rental car is considerably easier for Teide, Teno and flexible beach stops. Allow time for winding roads.
Public transport and mobilitySTAY SAFE OUTDOORS
Watch flags and local advice at beaches. Before Teide excursions, check roads, the cable car, trails and weather; do not underestimate cold and altitude.
Tenerife ON: trails and current noticesGOOD TO KNOW, HONESTLY
For many travellers, November to May is mild and sunny. June to September is excellent for the beach but notably warmer, especially around midday.
Generally it is drier and sunnier than the north, but there is no weather guarantee. Wind, cloud and sea conditions still vary locally each day.
Yes on sunny days, if you do not mind cooler water. Wind, waves and the particular beach matter more than air temperature alone.
Not necessarily for a purely beach-focused holiday. It saves time for Teide, the west and varied outings; organised tours are a good option if you dislike winding roads.
Yes, with safe beach conditions, shade breaks and short journeys. Pay particular attention to waves, sunshine and altitude.
Five nights work for the beach and an excursion. Seven or eight allow for changing weather and genuinely relaxed days.
Absolutely, but make it a separate day trip. It is much cooler, windier and more strenuous at altitude than the coast.
The south is usually drier, sunnier and more oriented towards beach holidays. Choose Northern Tenerife for greener scenery, Anaga, Puerto de la Cruz and historic Canarian towns.
