YOUR HOLIDAY. COMFORTABLY DIFFERENT.
The Bavarian Forest is not a backdrop for a rushed summit outing. It is for people who really want to experience nature at a slower pace.
The national park is the heart of the region: regenerating forest, bogland, wildlife watching and an extensive trail network. Zwiesel, Spiegelau and Neuschönau make useful bases.
Altitude tempers summer heat, although warm days still happen. The real differences are woodland shade, cool night air and the freedom to adapt routes to conditions.
For families and first-time visitors, centres, a treetop walk and short circular trails are often better choices than a long hike along the border ridge.
This guide covers the Bavarian Forest and Bavarian Forest National Park around Neuschönau, Spiegelau, Zwiesel and the Rachel–Lusen area. The Bohemian Forest across the Czech border has its own guide, Bohemian Forest & Lipno.
PLACES THAT STAY WITH YOU
Three ways into a region whose greatest asset is tranquillity.

The national park is both a protected area and a place to explore. Remain on marked paths and respect current regulations.

The more striking hikes need time, good shoes and an eye on the weather. A short circuit is no less rewarding.

The treetop walk and visitor centre make nature accessible to families and on changeable-weather days.
A practical base with a railway station and a glassmaking tradition.
A characteristic summit, best tackled in suitable conditions.
A rewarding experience without promising sightings of wildlife in its natural habitat.

May through September is an especially good period. In midsummer, this is a nature escape, not a guarantee of dry weather: the forests are comfortable, but thunderstorms can still occur.
Temperature comparison: The bars show the 1991–2020 climate normal. The coloured line shows how the five most recent complete years, 2021–2025, differ: red = warmer, green = cooler. These five years form a recent comparison period, not a new climate normal.

Yes, provided excursions are not too long and there is room to change plans for the weather.
That depends on where you stay and what you want to visit; it is useful for more remote nature spots.
