Réunion in January to March: why a fixed hiking plan may fail

An honest southern-summer assessment: warmth, humidity and current trail access determine the trip.

WHY NOW

Why this season?

Our winter coincides with Réunion’s warmer, wetter season. Mountain scenery alone does not make it a reliable coolcation.

Separate the travel image from the month

A cool mountain photograph may create an expectation that does not suit a January coastal stay. Réunion’s southern summer is warmer and wetter than southern winter. Choose the season for your actual preference rather than the most spectacular image.

If lower heat and dependable outdoor time matter most, southern winter is the clearer approach, though weather still varies. Cilaos elevation must not be used to describe a warm western coast as cool.

Closures belong to the decision

ONF provides open and closed trail information. Check its current map before each planned walk. An old GPS track or report does not establish permission. Closed routes are removed from the plan; bypassing them is outside this guide.

The same principle applies to the Cilaos approach. Mountain nights require suitable road conditions and weather advice. Keep spare days rather than scheduling several hard-to-change tours consecutively. Changing accommodation does not provide protection from unsuitable weather.

Adapt a fixed trip honestly

For already booked dates, a coastal stay with confirmed cultural visits can offer more flexibility. Gardens remain weather-dependent; museums need verified openings and suitable transport conditions. No alternative is guaranteed available.

Compare booking and transfer terms and follow official warnings. This article supports decisions rather than presenting the season as ideal. Travellers focused solely on walking or avoiding heat should seriously consider moving to southern winter.
