Réunion in August and September: planning lagoon days with children
Choose swimming areas, breaks and western culture without confusing sea views with permission to swim.

WHY NOW
Why this season?
A southern-winter stay can allow coastal time. The actual swimming area and daily conditions matter more than general seasonal advice.
Choose one section rather than collect beaches
Ermitage, La Saline and Saint-Leu are different coastal settings. Select one section for a family day and assess access, shade and return options. A longer beach checklist does not automatically improve swimming time.
Ask locally about currently permitted areas, supervision and notices. Follow signs and assess sea conditions. A lagoon or older travel description does not replace a current check. Plan a satisfying day when nobody enters the water, too.
Keep the daily plan close together
Accommodation with a genuinely short route can help interrupt outdoor time. Actual access matters more than straight-line distance. Lunch, meals and dry clothes should be reachable without spending the entire day in transit.
A separately planned cultural visit near Saint-Leu can provide a second focus. Stella Matutina and Mascarin have their own visitor information and different settings. Check the chosen venue and remember that a garden remains outdoors rather than automatically cool.
Season does not replace water checks
August and September belong to the southern-winter approach. This explains seasonal selection but promises neither calm seas nor open swimming areas. Wind and water conditions may change the itinerary. A shore walk and a break form a complete alternative.
The trip remains bounded to the west coast. Cilaos is a separate mountain block with different clothing and transport, not an addition to a long swimming day. Families benefit from planning fewer focuses carefully and leaving spare time unfilled.
