WHY NOW
Mild Atlantic air, levadas and an October full of outdoor possibilities.
Madeira stays mild in October as the strongest summer heat eases. It is a comfortable window for levada walks, viewpoints and days on the coast. On 6–11 October 2026, the Nature Festival provides another reason for an active visit.
What is the weather like in Madeira in October?
Madeira in October is mild, but sunshine is not guaranteed everywhere. For our travel planning guidance, we use coastal temperatures of around 24 °C by day and about 19 °C at night. The strongest summer heat has usually passed, while it remains warm enough for long days outside.
Local differences matter when planning: the north and south coasts, valleys and higher ground can experience very different weather on the same day. Clouds and showers are part of island life in October too.
Madeira in October 2026
The Nature Festival takes place on 6–11 October 2026. Activities in the mountains, valleys and by the sea put the landscape itself centre stage. For an active coolcation, the timing fits a season of mild temperatures particularly well.
Hiking in Madeira in October
October is a good time for levada walks and other hikes, provided you adapt your route to the current weather. High-level trails can be considerably cooler, windier or cloudier than Funchal and the south coast. Avoid fixing every walk before you arrive.
Check current trail closures and weather advice before heading out on levadas or mountain routes. After heavy rain, conditions can change at short notice.
The sea, the coast and quieter days
Coastal days fit an October trip well. Porto Moniz, the north coast or a relaxed day around Funchal give you alternatives when the mountains are covered in cloud. We still describe the sea as comfortable in this month, although wind and weather strongly affect how it feels.
Our tips for Madeira in October
- Choose your hiking days shortly beforehand, according to the weather and cloud cover.
- Set aside at least one day for the north coast or Porto Moniz.
- Bring a warm layer for higher ground, even when coastal temperatures are mild.
- For 2026, consider the Nature Festival on 6–11 October as a possible reason to visit.
