Sandwich Harbour in August and September: optional and organised
Check permits, coastal access and conditions before turning a dune photograph into a fixed itinerary.

WHY NOW
Why this season?
A later southern-winter stay can allow an additional landscape day. Actual access and organisation still determine the outing.
Distinguish the photograph from the outing
Sandwich Harbour is an optional trip south of Walvis Bay. A dramatic image does not reveal the conditions required to reach it. Avoid a spontaneous shore drive in an ordinary rental car. Choose a suitable organised outing and check its actual scope.
Ask about vehicle, departure point, duration, breaks and return before booking. Tell the operator about mobility and travellers’ needs. Dune driving and quiet landscape viewing can imply very different days; clarify which approach is actually offered.
Confirm permits and conditions
Namibia’s environment ministry identifies prior permit requirements for Sandwich Harbour. Have the operator confirm arrangements and current access. A booking does not prove that every coastal passage is usable in all conditions.
Tides, sea state and weather affect operation. Avoid guaranteed routes or photographs and accept necessary changes. Check booking terms for modifications. Stay within designated areas and do not disturb animals for extra pictures.
Retain a free coastal alternative
Do not place this outing immediately before a tight flight transfer. A free Walvis Bay or Swakopmund day is a worthwhile alternative. Dune 7 is a different outing rather than an equivalent copy of the Sandwich Harbour image.
August and September provide seasonal planning context, not access clearance. The stay remains complete without this optional day: town culture, lagoon and central shores support it. A landscape idea becomes a verifiable itinerary without putting the photograph above conditions.
