Saimaa in September: autumn colours and the first northern lights

September transforms Finland's lake district: colourful forests, darker nights and the possibility of northern lights above the water.

WHY NOW

Golden forests by day, dark skies by night.

From around mid-September, ruska brings autumn colours to the forests surrounding Lake Saimaa. Longer nights also make aurora sightings possible again, while the lakes and trails settle into a quieter season.

Autumn colours reach the lake district

Finland's autumn colours progress from north to south, typically arriving in the lake district around mid-September. The exact peak depends on the weather and cannot be pinned to one date. Exploring several lakeside forests is more rewarding than planning everything around a single photo stop.

Northern lights season begins again

By late August and September the nights are dark enough to see auroras again. Displays are possible in southern Finland, although less likely than in Lapland. Look for dark lakeshores away from towns rather than brightly lit urban areas.

Still a good month for active days

Hiking, cycling and, in suitable conditions, kayaking remain possible for much of September. The water is already much colder than in midsummer, so activities on the lake require more careful planning.

  • Do not schedule the peak of ruska for one fixed day.
  • Allow several clear nights if you hope to see the northern lights.
  • Factor in cold water and shorter days when kayaking.
