WHY THIS TOPIC

What happens when we make coolcation measurable?

The aim is comfort, not simply cold weather. For the Coolcation Index 2027, we have used our cleaned climate data to produce a combined summer ranking for the first time. The result is more surprising than a list of the northernmost destinations.

89 destinations, one simple question

Where can summer feel comfortable if temperatures of 30°C and above are not your idea of a holiday? For the Coolcation Index 2027, we compared 89 specific destinations. The underlying data consists of 1,068 checked monthly climate records; the ranking itself covers 267 summer months across June, July and August.

What the Coolcation Score measures

Scores range from 0 to 100. Daytime comfort contributes 50%, comfortable nights 25%, muggy conditions measured using dew point 15%, and precipitation 10%. Water temperature, prices, visitor numbers and overall destination quality are deliberately excluded. This keeps coasts, mountains, lakes and cities comparable.

The top 10 in the Coolcation Index 2027

  1. Val Müstair & Swiss National Park – 94.8 points
  2. Serra da Estrela – 94.4 points
  3. Hunsrück & Saar-Hunsrück Trail – 94.2 points
  4. Yorkshire Dales & North York Moors – 94.1 points
  5. Aosta Valley & Gran Paradiso – 93.8 points
  6. Vallée de Joux & Swiss Jura – 93.3 points
  7. Saimaa Lake District & Karelia – 93.2 points
  8. North Brittany Coast & Pink Granite Coast – 93.2 points
  9. Norfolk Broads & North Norfolk – 93.0 points
  10. Eifel & Rur Reservoir – 92.9 points

Why this is more interesting than a list of the coldest countries

The top positions do not simply go to the northernmost places. The index rewards balanced summer conditions: pleasantly warm days can score higher than very cool regions if nights are restful and humidity or rainfall do not weigh too heavily. That is why parts of Portugal, France and Italy rank highly alongside the Alps and northern Europe.

Explore June, July and August separately

The overall score is only a starting point. In the full ranking, you can sort by June, July or August, filter by country and – for coastal destinations – see average sea temperatures. Where climate varies significantly from month to month, this is far more useful than one annual figure.

An index is not a weather forecast

The figures describe long-term climate averages, not the weather on a particular travel day. Even a very high-scoring destination can experience occasional hot, cold or rainy days. The index is there to help you choose where to travel; check a current forecast shortly before your trip.
