Quito in December and January: an unhurried family arrival
Airport transport, short city routes and a weather-flexible start without an immediate high-altitude outing.

WHY NOW
Why this season?
Holiday planning coincides with a wetter season around year-end. A gentle start allows more flexibility than fixed early excursions.
Include airport transport in the arrival day
International airport UIO is in Tababela outside the urban core. For families, arrival does not end at landing. Arrange the final journey for luggage, arrival time and accommodation. There is no direct airport metro; with combined transport, check the final leg too.
Avoid a dense cultural programme on arrival day. Reachable food and a short accommodation-area visit are enough, particularly after a long flight. An elevated city does not become easier by adding a higher excursion immediately.
Keep first outdoor time small
Choose an easily reached neighbourhood or park session the next day. La Carolina may suit this if actual routes fit your base. A park promises neither dry weather nor a particular play area. What matters is being able to interrupt the visit comfortably.
Choose indoor visits and longer journeys afterwards. One shared interest can carry a day: city history, plants or the equator monument. Give Mitad del Mundo a later day of its own rather than attaching it to airport transport because it appears reachable on an overview map.
Check actual holidays
December and January fall within the wetter approach. Openings, transport and meals can change on holidays. Check your actual dates rather than a usual weekly schedule. A planned museum visit needs this confirmation too.
The trip need not become a complete Ecuador circuit. A Quito base, free initial days and one bounded outing create an independent stay. Travellers primarily wanting long dry outdoor programmes should reconsider seasonal priorities. This family plan begins with reliable everyday routes and recovery time.
