Orkney & Shetland in November: dark skies and Mirrie Dancers

In November, Shetland’s nights become long enough for the sky itself to be a destination. The Mirrie Dancers may appear, but they are never guaranteed.

Orkney & Shetland – view of the region

WHY NOW

Less daylight, more sky.

Shetland lies at 60 degrees north and is among the best places in the United Kingdom for northern lights. October to March is the darkest and most promising period, with an essential caveat: aurora sightings need both solar activity and clear skies.

Why November on Shetland is a deliberate alternative

November brings few daylight hours, strong winds and much less tourist infrastructure than summer. Travellers who still come experience the islands at a very local pace: empty roads, dramatic coasts, museums, galleries, good seafood and plenty of time to let the weather unfold.

Mirrie Dancers: Shetland’s northern lights

On Shetland, the aurora borealis is known as the “Mirrie Dancers”. The northern location and relatively low light pollution provide good opportunities for winter sightings. Shetland.org names October to March as the best period. There is never a guarantee, however: clouds can conceal even a strong aurora.

Do not travel solely for the northern lights

The official tourism website gives the same advice. An aurora-only trip can disappoint. Combine dark skies with coastal walks, archaeology, crafts, cafés and wildlife watching. Many places are also pleasantly quiet in November.

Orkney or Shetland?

For a short trip, choose one island group. Trying to combine both in a few days increases the risk that weather and connections dominate your plans.

Who is this trip for?

Photographers, aurora enthusiasts, travellers seeking peace and people who do not see rough weather as an interruption. November is less straightforward for a first Scottish holiday covering many classic sights.

  • Never treat aurora sightings as guaranteed.
  • Allow spare time around ferries and flights.
  • Pack windproof and waterproof clothing.
  • For short trips, choose Orkney or Shetland rather than both.
