WHY NOW
A cultural festival beneath almost endless midsummer evenings.
The 50th St Magnus International Festival takes place from 19 to 28 June 2026. Artists from Orkney, Scotland and many other countries perform in churches, halls and distinctive venues across the islands.
Why Orkney in June?
Around the summer solstice, the nights are extremely short. That leaves ample time to explore archaeological sites, coastal paths and island roads without scheduling every hour.
The St Magnus Festival, 19–28 June
The anniversary edition brings together music, theatre, literature, visual art and community events. Its cultural focus is an excellent fit for a trip where scenery and history are already closely intertwined.
Add Shetland only if you have enough time
If you want to combine the two island groups, leave room for weather delays and transport connections. Orkney alone can easily fill several days.
Reserve festival accommodation early.
Allow generous time for ferry and flight connections.
Bring windproof and waterproof clothing even in June.
Compare Lofoten, Finnish Lapland, Shetland and Alaska: four destinations with enough scenery and activities to make the journey worthwhile even on cloudy nights.
Shetland Wool Week runs until 3 October 2026, followed by the Accordion & Fiddle Festival from 8 to 13 October: autumn culture in the northern islands.
