WHY NOW

Why New Year is special here

In parts of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, New Year is marked on 31 December and again on 13 January, Old New Year under the Julian calendar. The Silvesterchläuse are especially impressive around Urnäsch, Waldstatt and Hundwil. This is a living local tradition, not merely a staged costume parade.

Appenzell celebrates New Year twice

In parts of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, New Year is marked on 31 December and again on 13 January, Old New Year under the Julian calendar. The Silvesterchläuse are especially impressive around Urnäsch, Waldstatt and Hundwil. This is a living local tradition, not merely a staged costume parade.

Bells, elaborate costumes and wordless yodelling

Groups of New Year mummers move from farm to farm from the early morning, ringing large bells and singing a wordless Zäuerli, an Appenzell form of natural yodelling. They wish the household a happy new year. The Schöne wear carefully decorated headdresses; the Wüeschte use dramatic masks and natural materials. Many details take enormous effort to make.

How to visit respectfully

Farmyards and houses are not open-air visitor stages. Keep paths clear, give performers space and avoid intrusive photography. Ask the local tourist office where spectators can watch without disturbing the groups. If either New Year date falls on a Sunday, the customary celebration moves to the preceding Saturday.

Know your limits in the Alpstein

This journey is about village life and manageable winter walks, not high-mountain adventure. Snow, ice and avalanche conditions make demanding Alpstein trails unsuitable for improvisation. As this destination is still awaiting final image and climate approval, the article should remain a draft until editorial checks are complete.
