Appenzell in Advent: traditional markets instead of a generic Christmas fair
Appenzell shows how personal Advent can feel: first the Chlausmarkt, then the Christchindlimarkt, right among the painted houses of the village centre.

WHY NOW
St Nicholas, handmade crafts and Appenzell village culture.
The Chlöösler Chlausmarkt takes place on 2 December 2026. The Christchindlimarkt follows on 5 and 6 December with handmade goods and a regional supporting programme.
Why this destination belongs in our Christmas series
Appenzell has no need for elaborate scenery: its colourful houses and narrow streets already provide the setting. During Advent, small markets add local crafts and traditions to the village atmosphere.
Two markets with different characters
The Chlausmarkt is more closely connected to St Nicholas and everyday local tradition. The Christchindlimarkt the following weekend focuses more on handmade products and gift ideas. A longer stay lets you experience both.
The Alpstein as a backdrop, not a compulsory hike
The Alpstein mountains are winter terrain in December. A market visit should not automatically be combined with summer hiking plans. Short valley walks and a relaxed day in the village make more sense.
Consider public transport
Appenzell is compact and pleasant to explore on foot. For an Advent weekend, you may be able to leave the car parked most of the time. That reduces parking stress and makes a mug of mulled wine simpler to enjoy.
Who is this Advent trip for?
Craft lovers, families and travellers seeking a small-scale Swiss Advent experience.

Do not treat the Alpstein as a summer hiking destination
Autumn foliage is more than a photo opportunity. These five destinations combine colour with temples, rock formations, Alpine villages and quiet walking paths, each in its own seasonal window.
