Mecklenburg Lake District in Advent: a Christmas market by Lake Müritz

The Mecklenburg Lake District becomes very quiet in Advent. From 10 to 13 December, Waren briefly comes alive with a small, compact Christmas market.

Four market days rather than six weeks of festive trading.

The Christmas market on Neuer Markt square in Waren an der Müritz is scheduled for 10–13 December 2026.

Why this destination belongs in our Christmas series

Summer in the Mecklenburg Lake District is all about the water. In December, the region changes completely: boating days give way to quiet lakeside paths, while Waren becomes a cultural focal point.

Wooden stalls and family activities on Neuer Markt

Crafts, food, children's activities and Father Christmas are all part of the programme. A traditional goose raffle is also announced for 12 December – a small detail that gives the market a distinctly local character.

Lake Müritz is the winter backdrop, not an outdoor playground

Short lakeside walks can be wonderful, but wind and darkness limit longer outdoor plans. The Müritzeum makes a useful indoor alternative.

A weekend is enough

Because the market runs for only a few days, it makes sense to plan a trip around that particular weekend. Staying in the centre saves journeys and makes evenings more relaxed.
