Lakes instead of the sea: five waterside summer destinations without Mediterranean heat

The sea is not your only option for a summer holiday. These five lake regions combine swimming with cycling, mountains or forests – often with less heat.

WHY THIS TOPIC

Summer days on the water do not require a coastline.

Lake regions are especially appealing if swimming is only one part of your day. They bring water together with hiking, cycling and villages, often with shorter journeys than a classic coastal road trip.

Why a lake can be more practical than the sea in summer

A lake holiday has an underrated advantage: the water is rarely the only reason to visit. Cycle paths, mountains, forests and small towns are often right beside it. If the weather is not right for swimming, the day need not be a write-off.

For a coolcation, there is another advantage. Many lakes lie farther north or at higher elevations than classic Mediterranean beaches. That does not eliminate hot spells, but it can considerably reduce heat exposure.

1. Mecklenburg Lake District: travel by water

The Mecklenburg Lake District is the flattest, most water-filled option. Lake Müritz, canals and smaller lakes are ideal for canoeing, houseboating, cycling and swimming spots.

The region is easy for families because challenging mountain paths are not part of the equation. The downside: popular places can be busy on hot holiday weekends. Staying a little way from the big harbours brings more peace.

2. Bled & Bohinj: lakes with real Alpine scenery

Bled and Bohinj combine water with mountains. Bohinj is particularly good for swimming: the official destination identifies designated bathing areas and monitors water quality during the season.

The important distinction is that swimming is not permitted in every Alpine lake. High-mountain lakes inside the national park are protected. Respect those rules and you can enjoy a great combination of lake days and hiking.

3. Klöntalersee: compact and close to the mountains

Klöntalersee lies deep between steep mountain slopes. It suits travellers who want to hike in the morning and head for the water in the afternoon.

The area is smaller and quieter than Switzerland's better-known lakes. That makes it better for a few unhurried days than an exhaustive sightseeing itinerary.

4. Vallée de Joux: the Jura rather than the high Alps

Vallée de Joux is a good alternative if you want Switzerland without a high-Alpine holiday. The lake, Jura hills, cycle paths and watchmaking culture create a relaxed summer rhythm.

Even in summer, evenings can be chilly. Coolcation fans may consider that a benefit, but pack an extra layer.

5. Lipno: a family-friendly corner of the Bohemian Forest

Lipno in the Bohemian Forest combines a reservoir, cycling and family-friendly facilities. It is less dramatic than the Julian Alps, but also easier to enjoy.

That can be an advantage with younger children: short distances, water and lots to do without demanding mountain hikes.

Which lake is right for you?

  • Paddling and cycling: Mecklenburg Lake District.
  • Mountains and swimming: Bohinj/Bled.
  • Quiet Switzerland: Klöntalersee.
  • Jura hills and long evenings: Vallée de Joux.
  • Families and easy activities: Lipno.

Our verdict

A great summer holiday beside the water does not have to involve salt water. Combine a lake with the surrounding landscape and you often get more activities, fewer transfers and much better options when the weather changes.
