Mauritius in May: one coastal base or two?
Plan west and north in a transition month: change hotels only when it supports several outing days.

WHY NOW
Why this season?
May is a transition month. Flexible base planning works better than fixed assumptions about summer or winter weather.
Routes first, hotels afterwards
Write down three wishes: a beach section, a town visit and a garden or cultural day. Assign them to west or north before deciding whether one hotel is enough. A list of every geographical possibility soon creates long daily transfers.
Flic en Flac supports a western focus. Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches can make several northern days easier. If you only want one outing in the other area, compare a day transfer first. Two bases are a planning tool, not a quality measure in themselves.
Treat a move as a travel day
A longer stay may benefit from changing base after several western nights. Allow for checkout, transport, luggage and settling in. A Port Louis cultural visit only fits if time and luggage arrangements really work. The city is not automatically a break from heat.
For families, ask whether the second accommodation simplifies daily life. Nearby meals, suitable swimming access and a real rest period matter more than two different hotel photographs. Check these details for both locations before booking.
Plan May without a weather label
Mauritian meteorologists classify May as a transition month. That does not establish a daily weather pattern or guarantee dry beaches. Coastal exposure, sea state and your own temperature preferences still matter. Retain a garden or town block as an alternative.
Compare total arrangements with a one-base version: two transfers, potentially different meal plans and lost holiday time all count. If the second coast fulfils only one brief wish, a planned day outing may be calmer. The May itinerary benefits from deliberate routes rather than the highest number of locations.
