WHY NOW

The Atlantic arrives straight onto the plate.

From 25 to 27 September 2026, Galway celebrates the beginning of the local oyster season, which runs into spring. The traditional Oyster & Seafood Festival is a delicious reason to combine Galway with Connemara or the Burren.

Festival from 25 to 27 September

Events include oyster and seafood tastings, farm tours, an Oyster Trail, and Irish and international oyster-opening championships. On Saturday, contestants from different countries compete for the world title.

Why September works on the west coast

After the main holiday period the Wild Atlantic Way grows quieter. Days shorten and weather changes quickly, but the combination of rugged shores, pubs, seafood and lively town life is wonderfully suited to early autumn.

Stay in Galway

If you are travelling for more than the festival, add extra days. Connemara lies west of Galway, while the Burren and County Clare coast are to the south. A second base outside the city is better than spending every day on long drives.

  • Book festival-weekend accommodation early.
  • Keep rainwear and windproof layers handy.
  • Set aside at least one weather-flexible day for Connemara or the Burren.
