WHY NOW

As autumn arrives outside, the cultural calendar picks up indoors.

Filmfest Hamburg runs until 3 October 2026, Harbour Front until 11 October, and the International Queer Film Festival follows from 13 to 18 October. Between events, the harbour and museums offer plenty to explore in changing weather.

A month for culture and the city

Hamburg does not need uninterrupted sunshine in October. Its appeal lies in mixing indoor and outdoor plans: Speicherstadt or the Alster in the morning, an exhibition or film later, and theatre, a reading or dinner in the evening.

Filmfest at the start of the month

Filmfest Hamburg takes place from 24 September to 3 October 2026, showing international feature films and documentaries across several cinemas. According to Hamburg Tourism, a free-admission programme returns on 3 October at participating venues; advance ticket reservations are still recommended.

And the programme continues

With Harbour Front until 11 October and the International Queer Film Festival from 13 to 18 October, events continue well beyond Filmfest. Travellers can choose the dates that best match their cultural interests.

  • Reserve tickets early for popular screenings.
  • Pack windproof and waterproof layers for the harbour and Elbe.
  • Treat indoor activities as a main attraction, not just a rainy-day backup.
