Glarus in Advent: 600 children at the Chlaus procession

Glarus combines its Christmas market with a striking local tradition: around 600 children and young people carry lanterns and torches through the town during the Chlaus procession.

WHY NOW

Here, the procession matters just as much as the market stalls.

The Glarus Christmas market takes place from 4 to 6 December 2026. The traditional Friday-evening Chlaus procession, featuring around 600 children and young people, is also announced.

Why this destination belongs in our Christmas series

Glarnerland provides an appealing contrast to huge markets. Glarus is small enough for the stalls, station, Old Town and mountain backdrop to be close together. Advent feels more like a local town festival than a special zone created for tourists.

The Chlaus procession on Friday evening

Lanterns, torches and hundreds of young participants give the opening evening a distinctly local character. If this is what you want to see, plan to be there on Friday rather than visiting only on Saturday.

A new little Christmas village as an extra

A small Christmas village with wooden chalets has also been announced for two December weekends in 2026. That spreads the Advent atmosphere across more than a single weekend.

Lake Klöntal only in suitable conditions

The lake can look spectacular in winter, but road access, snow and ice make a real difference. For a Christmas-market trip, keep Glarus itself as the reliable main plan.

Who is this Advent trip for?

Families, travellers interested in Swiss traditions and anyone who prefers a small Advent town to big-city crowds.

  • Christmas market: 4–6 December 2026
  • Chlaus procession on Friday evening
  • Additional Christmas village on December weekends
  • Visit the Klöntal only if winter conditions allow
