WHY NOW
Choose a fjord city over an ambitious fjord road trip.
Bergen launches its 2026 Christmas season on 14 November with Lysfesten and the famous Pepperkakebyen gingerbread town. The Christmas market follows on 20 November.
Why Fjord Norway needs a different approach in November
November is not a substitute for a summer tour of the fjords. Daylight is limited, the weather can be rough and some tourist connections run less frequently. Bergen, by contrast, makes an excellent fixed base: city life, culture, food and selected fjord excursions can be combined flexibly.
Festival of Lights and gingerbread town from 14 November
Bergen's Christmas season begins on 14 November with the traditional Festival of Lights. The same day sees the opening of Pepperkakebyen, a huge gingerbread town made with the help of local residents who build everything from little houses to imaginative structures.
Christmas market from 20 November
Just under a week later, Bergen's Christmas market opens on Festplassen. In 2026, it runs from 20 November to 22 December, making the second half of November especially appealing for a winter city break.
Add fjords selectively
A clear November day can be spectacular. Rather than attempting a full circuit, choose one or two available fjord excursions based on actual timetables and the weather. Bergen remains your reliable base.
