Eifel & Rur Reservoir · November–December

The Eifel in Advent: Monschau’s timber-framed streets and Christmas market

Monschau hardly needs an artificial Christmas backdrop: timber-framed houses, narrow lanes and the river already provide the setting. From 27 November, around 35 market stalls join in.

WHY NOW

A small market in a town that already looks like a film set.

Monschau Christmas Market is open on all four Advent weekends from 27 November to 20 December 2026.

Why this destination belongs in our Christmas series

For the Eifel and Rur Reservoir region, Monschau is a natural cultural focus in Advent. The town works well even when the weather changes, while outings to the Rursee and the national park can remain flexible.

Around 35 stalls in the historic centre

The market is manageable in size. Crafts, local products and food stalls are scattered around the old town, so it is easy to combine them with regular shops and cafés.

Local Eifel specialities make the difference

Printen gingerbread, mustard, local liqueurs and hearty food give the visit a distinctive flavour. Instead of just comparing mulled wines, make time to sample regional products.

Do not make Lake Rursee compulsory

A clear winter day could be perfect for the Rursee or the national park. In mist or rain, Monschau itself offers the better plan. Short daylight hours mean setting off early for nature excursions.

Who would enjoy this Advent trip?

Couples, families and weekend travellers who prefer half-timbered lanes to a big city.
