Christmas in a fortress.

The historic, romantic Christmas market takes place on Saturdays and Sundays throughout all four Advent weekends in 2026, starting on 28 November.

Why this destination belongs in our Christmas series

Königstein is an ideal winter highlight in Saxon Switzerland. The scenery still matters, but the fortress also offers history, exhibitions and an Advent programme, whether or not the hiking trails are in good condition.

A market above ground – and Christmas underground

Alongside stalls on the fortress plateau, there is a festive area in the casemates. A large star and historical displays are part of the setting. The unusual location makes the market worth a trip in its own right.

Book online rather than turning up unannounced

The fortress warns of limited capacity and the need for online tickets. Plan ahead, especially if you want to visit on a Saturday.

Hiking is an optional extra

In dry weather, you could add the Bastei viewpoint or a short walk along the Elbe. Icy steps and early darkness change what is practical, though. Do not make the market visit dependent on completing a long winter hike.
