WHY NOW

A November evening you will only find in northern Tenerife.

The Fiestas de San Andrés take place on 29 November. Traditional wooden-board rides feature in Icod de los Vinos, while Puerto de la Cruz celebrates with Los Cacharros and a chestnut gathering featuring regional food and young wine.

Why November works so well in North Tenerife

As Central Europe gets much cooler, Tenerife stays mild in November. The north is greener and more changeable than the south, which suits a trip focused on hiking, historic towns, coastline and food rather than solely on the beach.

San Andrés on 29 November

The most unusual November occasion is the night of 29 November. In Icod de los Vinos, young people and adults race down steep Calle del Plano on wooden boards. The sound of the boards mingles with the aromas of new wine, traditionally opened after the harvest.

Puerto de la Cruz celebrates differently

On the same evening in Puerto de la Cruz, the Los Cacharros tradition involves pulling tins and other metal objects through the streets on strings. At Plaza del Charco, a Castañada brings chestnuts, fish, gofio, sweet potatoes and wine to the celebrations.

Hiking without midsummer heat

November is also a good month for Anaga, La Orotava, Garachico and mid-altitude walking routes. Weather varies over very short distances: sunshine on the coast, clouds in the trade-wind zone and much cooler conditions higher up can all occur on the same day.

Who should visit North Tenerife now?

Active travellers, food lovers and anyone wanting to experience Canarian culture. If stable beach weather is your only priority, the drier south is usually a safer choice.

  • Keep 29 November free for Icod or Puerto de la Cruz.
  • Check elevation and local weather alerts before hikes.
  • Do not assume parking will be easy during festivities.
  • Pack a light waterproof and windproof jacket.
