WHY NOW
A festival day that brings centuries of history onto Kyoto's streets.
Jidai Matsuri, one of Kyoto's major traditional festivals, takes place on 22 October 2026. Around 2,000 people in historic dress parade through the city, at a time when the oppressive summer heat has generally eased.
Kyoto after the hot summer
October falls between two distinct travel periods: the worst summer heat is usually over, but the famous autumn foliage in the lower city often peaks later. It is a welcome window for exploring Kyoto on foot.

The historical procession starts at Kyoto Gyoen and travels to Heian Shrine, representing different eras in the city's history. Official viewing seats are planned for 2026, with regular tickets going on sale in September.
Stay longer than the festival day
Spend several days around 22 October. Enjoy the parade, then explore Higashiyama, Arashiyama, Uji or Nara. Many temple areas feel quieter early in the morning and again later in the afternoon.
- Check the procession route and seating in advance.
- Rain may cause the procession to move to 23 October.
- Do not assume foliage will already be at peak colour in late October.
