Jersey & Guernsey with children: a summer trip with Herm
Two main islands and one manageable excursion may be enough. For families, the quality of a day matters more than completing an island checklist.

WHY NOW
Why this season?
Summer gives more scope for coastal and beach days. Holiday demand, tides and local water conditions still matter; warm swimming water is not promised.
Two places to stay are enough to begin
Start family planning with accommodation and journeys to the harbour. On Jersey, useful bus connections or a deliberately limited rental-car period can help. On Guernsey, a Saint Peter Port base may simplify the Herm excursion. Actual access with children and luggage matters more than a short distance on a map.
Keep the move between bases as a separate travel day. After the crossing, settling in, eating and taking a short walk are enough. A second boat the same day may work on paper but leaves little room for tired children or a changed departure. A free afternoon is not a wasted holiday day, especially in summer.
A beach is not automatically a swimming site
Jersey’s broad bays suit different kinds of days. Saint Ouen’s Bay belongs to the open western coast and is also a surfing area. Choose the specific section around weather, supervision and your family’s ability. Walking, playing in sand and having a break already make a beach day; swimming is a separate decision with local conditions.
A suitable castle or museum visit changes the rhythm of a cultural day. Steps and extensive outdoor grounds require different planning from a short indoor exhibition. Let children help choose the purpose of the day and establish meals, toilets and an easy way to shorten the programme beforehand.
Give Herm a day of its own
From Guernsey, Herm becomes a smaller-island break. Plan an appropriate walk and time at a beach without having to cover the entire coastline. The landing point may depend on the tide; confirm access and the actual route back to the boat. A reserved ticket replaces neither live operating information nor a useful time margin.
Sark is an additional option if the family wants another excursion. Keep it as a different day with its own harbour access and route planning. Car-free roads do not automatically mean easy paths for small children or buggies. Add Alderney only as a deliberate extension, not an essential part of this family week.
Our suggestion stays manageable: several nights on Jersey, several on Guernsey, one prepared Herm day and an unplanned period. Coastal air, movement and island heritage carry the summer trip. The number of islands visited is not a measure of its success.

CLIMATE AT A GLANCE
June–August in Channel Islands: Jersey & Guernsey
Climate, travel atmosphere and activities for the period covered.
June
Longer days offer more room for coastlines and smaller islands. Keep an unplanned day; add Alderney only as a separate extension.
July
Families benefit from fewer accommodation changes and suitable beach breaks. Compare popular connections and accommodation early and assess water conditions locally.
August
Combine two bases with main-island days and excursions. Account for holiday demand; a full programme does not replace a weather buffer.
