WHY NOW

Christmas-market hopping instead of just one market.

Innsbruck's first Christmas markets open on 13 November 2026. Events continue into early January across historical streets, neighbourhoods and elevated locations with mountain views.

Why this destination belongs in our Christmas series

Innsbruck stands out because town and mountains fit together naturally. Explore the Old Town and museums in the morning, climb a little higher in the afternoon and visit a Christmas market in the evening. Few Alpine cities make this combination so easy.

Seven markets with different characters

The Old Town and Marktplatz markets open on 13 November 2026, as does the Bergisel imperial Christmas market around mid-November. Hungerburg, St Nikolaus and Wilten follow on 20 November, while Maria-Theresien-Straße joins the festivities from 25 November. Spread them across several days rather than attempting every market in one evening.

The Hungerburg market offers a different perspective

Hungerburg is special less for its number of stalls than for its hillside location over Innsbruck. In clear weather, festive lights come with impressive city views. In föhn winds, snowfall or poor visibility, keep the mountain part of your trip flexible.

Turn a market visit into a short holiday

Two or three nights are enough for a compact Advent break. Visit no more than two markets a day, leaving time for the Hofkirche, Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, Old Town or a walk along the Inn. Current weather and lift operations matter more for Nordkette and Hungerburg than an itinerary fixed weeks in advance.

Who is this Advent trip for?

Ideal for couples and families who want genuine Alpine scenery alongside Christmas markets. For absolute peace, avoid the busiest Old Town times on weekends.

  • Old Town and Marktplatz markets from 13 November 2026.
  • Keep Hungerburg flexible from 20 November.
  • Do not attempt all seven markets in one day.
  • Check current cable-car operating times.
