The Harz in Advent: Goslar’s Christmas forest in the old town

Goslar does more than set up Christmas stalls: a forest of real trees appears right in the old town. Together with around 70 stalls, it creates a wonderfully concentrated Advent atmosphere.

Panorama of the Upper Harz: mountain woodland, moors, rock formations and historic towns

WHY NOW

When a piece of the Harz forest comes into town.

Goslar’s Christmas market and Christmas forest are scheduled to run from 25 November to 30 December 2026.

Why this destination belongs in our Christmas series

The Harz mountains can be unpredictable in winter, but Goslar makes a dependable base. Its UNESCO-listed heritage and historic streets work regardless of snowfall, while the Christmas forest brings a touch of the surrounding hills into town.

Around 70 stalls and a real Christmas forest

Market stalls and the woodland area form two distinct sections. Illuminated conifers in the Christmas forest, in particular, make the visit more than just another Christmas market stop.

Visit the Brocken only if conditions are right

An Advent excursion to the Brocken is tempting, but it can mean strong wind, ice and poor visibility. Keep it as an option rather than a fixed part of every weekend away.

Use Goslar as a base for two nights

Staying overnight lets you enjoy the market in the evening without driving home. Spend a second day in the Upper Harz, visiting a museum or taking a short winter walk.

Who would enjoy this Advent trip?

Families, railway and Harz enthusiasts, and travellers looking to combine a Christmas market with low mountain scenery.

  • 25 November–30 December 2026
  • Around 70 stalls
  • A dedicated Christmas forest
  • Brocken excursions only when weather permits
