WHY NOW

A month with plenty happening underwater.

In November, the sea lion pupping season continues, green sea turtle mating season begins and numerous seabirds breed. Nutrient-rich waters make the month particularly interesting for experienced snorkellers and divers.

Why November is special in Galápagos

Galápagos does not have four conventional seasons. November falls at the end of the cooler, drier garúa period, just before the transition to the warmer season. The result combines relatively mild air temperatures, still-cool water and very active marine life.

Sea lion pups and the start of turtle mating season

Galápagos Conservation Trust describes November as a time when the Galápagos sea lion pupping season continues. At the same time, green sea turtles begin their reproductive period. Several seabird species are also breeding and raising their young.

Why the sea is so lively

The Humboldt Current brings cool, nutrient-rich water to the archipelago until November. Underwater visibility may consequently be lower than in the warm season, while the food supply attracts many fish, birds and marine mammals.

Plan snorkelling and diving realistically

The water can be cool, and currents and sea conditions vary by island and route. Suitable wetsuits and local guides’ assessments matter more than a general monthly average. In particular, not every site is equally suitable for inexperienced swimmers.

Who is November for?

Wildlife enthusiasts, experienced snorkellers and divers, and travellers visiting Galápagos for its ecosystems rather than simply warm swimming water.

  • Strictly respect wildlife viewing distances.
  • Expect cooler water.
  • Choose your route around wildlife interests rather than island names alone.
  • Follow local national park rules and guides’ instructions.
