Engadin in Advent: six village markets instead of one big Christmas fair

Christmas is spread across several villages in the Engadin. From late November through December, small markets follow one another – ideal for a trip with short journeys and plenty of local character.

WHY NOW

Advent as a gentle journey through the valley.

The 2026 calendar includes markets in La Punt on 28 November, Celerina on 5 December, Samedan on 6 December, Vicosoprano on 11 December, Zuoz on 12 December and Sils on 20 December.

Why this destination belongs in our Christmas series

The Engadin is perfect for a Christmas series that does not tell the same market story every time. Advent here is decentralised. Rather than one enormous event, there are numerous small village markets, each with its own atmosphere.

One market per village, not all on the same day

The dates are spread over several weeks. With two or three nights, you can choose one market as the focus and spend the rest of the time exploring St. Moritz, lakeside routes or another village.

Historic village centres are part of the attraction

Places such as Zuoz, Sils and La Punt are atmospheric even without extensive decorations, thanks to traditional Engadin houses and narrow streets. The market adds to the village rather than overwhelming it.

Remember the altitude and winter conditions

The Upper Engadin sits at high elevation. Cold weather, snow and icy paths are more normal during Advent than in lower-lying cities. With children, plan shorter periods outdoors and regular warm breaks.

Who is this Advent trip for?

People who enjoy a peaceful Christmas atmosphere, village architecture and several small markets rather than one vast event.

  • Market dates between 28 November and 20 December
  • Pick one village for each weekend visit
  • Prepare for altitude and cold
  • Look beyond St. Moritz as the only focal point
