Channel Islands in spring: coastal walks from two bases
A spring island trip works well when walks and town pauses share the programme. Jersey and Guernsey carry the plan, with smaller islands as suitable additions.

WHY NOW
Why this season?
Spring suits shorter coastal walks and green breaks. Flowering, weather and seasonal connections vary; no particular natural spectacle is promised.
Choose a walk before choosing another island
A spring Channel Islands holiday benefits from genuinely settling in for a few days. Plan Jersey and Guernsey as two bases. At each, select a coastal section, a cultural alternative and an unplanned period. The whole day then does not depend on a particular crossing and a long walk working immediately one after the other.
On Jersey, a day around Gorey can start with the harbour and Mont Orgueil. Decide whether heritage or walking takes priority. After a substantial castle visit, there is no need for a lengthy coastal hike; a shorter village walk and a break may complete the day. For another outing, a suitable western coastal route offers a different landscape rather than more of the same sightseeing programme.
Green space within the town
On Guernsey, Saint Peter Port pairs harbour life with town streets. Candie Gardens add a green setting above them. Connect these places with time in between rather than making the climb for a quick photograph. If island history interests you, check the specific museum offering. Gardens are worthwhile without a promised floral display: the visit draws its appeal from the contrast between town, views and a quieter pause.
For a coastal walk, choose its start and finish around your group rather than the largest number of viewpoints. Wind protection, suitable footwear and a shorter return option support a flexible day. Current access matters more than an old itinerary. A cove reached down a steep path is not automatically an easy family outing.
Smaller islands as possibilities
Add Herm or Sark only when actual outward and return services fit. Give each island its own day. If conditions are unsuitable, Guernsey retains worthwhile alternatives, so the holiday need not feel like a cancelled excursion. Alderney is explicitly outside the standard programme: extend with separate accommodation and an additional return buffer to include it.
The Coolcation idea is an active stay in a maritime setting. The Saint Peter Port climate reference offers seasonal guidance, not a weather guarantee for every island. Keep fixed commitments limited and leave room for the walks that actually suit your travel day.

CLIMATE AT A GLANCE
March–May in Channel Islands: Jersey & Guernsey
Climate, travel atmosphere and activities for the period covered.
March
Combine town and coastal walks. Add smaller islands only with suitable actual connections; wind remains a planning factor.
April
A useful transition for shorter walks and heritage. Check seasonal openings rather than assuming the summer network.
May
Plan the two main islands as an unhurried combination. Give Herm and Sark separate days with confirmed returns.
