WHY NOW

Early summer at the Cape: warm, windy and ahead of the hottest months.

Cape Town becomes noticeably more summery in November without yet reaching the hottest part of the year. For our climate guidance we use approximately 25°C by day and 13°C at night. Atlantic winds can freshen the air, although individual hot days are still possible.

What is the weather like in Cape Town in November?

Cape Town in November is entering early summer in South Africa. For climate guidance, we use around 25 °C by day and 13 °C at night. Days grow longer, rain is usually less important than in the winter half of the year, and wind becomes a defining part of the experience.

These are monthly guide values, not a weather guarantee. Conditions can vary dramatically across Cape Town in a single day: sunny and warm in the City Bowl, much windier on the coast and cooler on Table Mountain.

Is November a good time to visit Cape Town?

For us, November is one of the most interesting months for an active Cape Town trip. It comes before the South African midsummer of January and February while already providing plenty of daylight for Table Mountain, coastal drives and the Cape Peninsula.

Cape Town works as a coolcation in November not because it is consistently cool, but because its Atlantic position and wind can make many days more pleasant than in South Africa's hot interior. Still, expect warm and occasionally hot days.

Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula in November

November is good for a flexible mix of city and nature. Wind remains the deciding factor on Table Mountain: cable car services and hiking conditions may change at short notice. Do not limit your mountain visit to a single fixed day; keep several possible windows free.

Allow a full day for the Cape Peninsula, with plenty of spare time. Coastal light, Cape Point and the different bays are much more enjoyable if every stop is not planned down to the minute.

How warm is the sea?

Our monthly guidance is about 17 °C for water temperature. The Atlantic is therefore considerably cooler than the air. Swimming is a matter of personal preference; for many travellers, beach walks, viewpoints and short spells by the water are more realistic than a traditional beach holiday.

Wind is part of Cape Town

Wind can make warm days pleasant, but it can also disrupt plans. Bring a lightweight windproof layer even if the forecast is sunny. Check current conditions on the day for Table Mountain, boat trips and exposed coastal stretches.

What you can combine in November

  • Explore the City Bowl, Waterfront and neighbourhoods on foot,
  • keep several potential Table Mountain slots open,
  • allow a full day for the Cape Peninsula,
  • think of beaches as places to enjoy the scenery rather than guaranteed swimming spots,
  • on very warm days, schedule longer activities for mornings and late afternoons.

Cape Town in November or later in summer?

If you want warmth but would prefer to avoid extreme heat, November often offers a good compromise. December is more summery and busier, while January and February are warmer on average. For a coolcation-oriented trip we would therefore choose November or the South African autumn over high summer.
