Banff & Jasper in November: mountain films instead of a classic road trip
November is no longer the season for a classic summer road trip through the Canadian Rockies. That makes the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, running from 31 October to 8 November, an excellent reason to visit.

WHY NOW
Mountain culture indoors, the first taste of winter outside.
The 51st Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival runs from 31 October to 8 November 2026, bringing more than 80 films, talks, book events and a festival marketplace to Banff.
Why the Rockies need a different travel plan in November
November is the transition into winter. Many classic summer hikes are no longer practical, roads and trails may have winter conditions, and daylight is limited. Banff is still worth visiting – but the trip needs a different focus.
Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival until 8 November
The festival's 51st edition takes place from 31 October to 8 November 2026. More than 80 films, talks, book events, exhibitions and a marketplace turn Banff into an international meeting point for mountain culture during the first week of November.
Make Banff your base rather than driving hundreds of kilometres
Summer itineraries often cover long stretches between Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. In November, less is more. Stay several nights in Banff and choose short outings according to the weather and road conditions. Jasper can still be part of the trip, but should not be squeezed automatically into a tight schedule.
Take winter conditions seriously
Snow and ice can affect both paths and roads. Summer trail descriptions may no longer apply in November. Parks Canada publishes seasonal closures and up-to-date notices; check these before every outing.
Who is Banff in November best for?
Mountain-film fans, photographers, couples and travellers who like an early taste of winter. It is less suitable for a traditional hiking holiday with lots of high-altitude trails.
- Festival: 31 October–8 November 2026.
- Check current Parks Canada information.
- Visit fewer places and build in more flexibility.
- Check winter tyre rules and car hire conditions.
