Cycling the Algarve with children: an active autumn holiday among lagoons and fishing villages
Lagoons, salt pans, castles and fishing villages instead of a beach-only week: this family cycling holiday in the Algarve is for families who really want to ride together.

WHY THIS TRIP
Enjoy the warmth of southern Portugal without cycling in the peak summer heat.
This seven-day trip from ASI Reisen runs from Monte Gordo via Tavira to Estoi. Cycling stages are mostly flat, between 21 and 37 kilometres, with the option to replace one ride with a rest day or boat trip.
Think of the Algarve as more than a beach holiday
For many people, the Algarve means sandy coves, holiday resorts and red cliffs. This trip focuses on something different: the eastern Algarve, through the Ria Formosa, small fishing villages, salt pans and historic towns. Cycling is not an optional extra here – it is the thread connecting the whole week.
That makes it particularly interesting for families who want to stay active together without tackling strenuous mountain routes. The terrain is mostly flat, daily distances range from 21 to 37 kilometres and, according to ASI, around half the route follows designated cycle paths.
The first days are deliberately gentle
After a transfer from Faro, the trip begins in Monte Gordo. The first cycling day covers only about 21 kilometres, via Vila Real de Santo António to Castro Marim. A castle, the Guadiana River, marshland and salt pans make even this short stage wonderfully varied.
The following day covers around 28 kilometres along the coast to Tavira. On the way, Cacela Velha offers views over the Ria Formosa. This is exactly the kind of stage we like with school-age children: a clear destination but plenty of small stops along the way.
Ria Formosa is the real highlight
The natural park accompanies the route for several days. Lagoons, tidal flats and salt pans provide habitat for many birds; you might even spot flamingos near Olhão. At the same time, the landscape feels close to everyday local life – fishing boats, markets and small harbours are as much a part of it as nature.
For children, that is often more engaging than a purely scenic route. You are not just cycling through beautiful countryside; there is always something worth stopping for.
A rest day is possible – a genuine advantage
There is another planned 28-kilometre loop around Tavira, but ASI explicitly offers an alternative: take the day off or enjoy a boat excursion in the Ria Formosa. We think having that choice is enormously important for a family trip.
The longer stages follow later. Tavira to Estoi is around 37 kilometres, and the circuit via Olhão about 36 kilometres. Both involve roughly 300 metres of climbing, so they are moderate on paper but still proper active days with children.
Why late October makes sense for cycling
We would not describe a multi-day Algarve cycle tour in midsummer as a particularly family-friendly coolcation. Autumn is a much better prospect: the extreme summer heat has eased, but southern Portugal often still has mild days.
For cycling, that matters more than chasing the highest temperature. Late October is not a guaranteed dry season, though. Rain, wind and cooler evenings are possible. With that in mind, and some light rain gear, longer rides are generally more comfortable than in July.
It is an active trip, not just labelled “family-friendly”
Calling this a family holiday does not make 36 or 37 kilometres easy for children who rarely cycle. We would recommend it to families who already ride together regularly at home and know their children enjoy covering these distances.
If you prefer gentler rides with plenty of time for relaxing, the Euganean Hills may offer more flexibility. But if you want a whole week genuinely on the move, the Algarve gives you a lovely mixture of activity and scenery.
Organisation and accommodation
The trip includes six nights’ accommodation, daily breakfasts and four dinners. Transfers from Faro Airport to the first hotel and back to Faro at the end are included. A navigation app and local support number make independent travel easier.
Much of the organisation is taken care of without having to join a guided group. That is a big advantage for families who like to set their own pace.
Our coolcation verdict
Of the three ASI family cycling trips, this Algarve route is both the most active and the farthest south. Autumn is precisely when that makes sense: enjoy milder conditions on the bike rather than basing the holiday on beach temperatures. Ria Formosa, Tavira, Castro Marim and Olhão offer enough variety to stop seven days feeling like one endlessly long ride.
Before booking, we would still check the actual departure date for your preferred school holiday period directly with ASI Reisen.
